Lorenzo Martelli’s work has a sense of the ungraspable and unpredictable nature of life in it. There is always a “beyond” in his photographs, a meaningful gesture and an aura of mystery which the photography covers with another mystery. And the sense of his work is in part that of making images which contain this “beyond” within the images, images that go beyond images.
Martelli belongs to a generation of photographers who are aware that they are influenced by their experience of the virtual dimension, the experience of one who no longer lives only in time and only in real places. As a consequence his work is not anchored to a precise narrative dimension. His images are interior itineraries with a completely autonomous life and they ask those who observe to look freely with no preconceived narratives.
Each piece of this mosaic shines with its own light and its own geography. It does not set itself apart with its style, but seeks the consistency of a whole vision. Martelli uses the ductility of today’s photographic language, genres and techniques with the utmost freedom. He sees in black and white and in colour at the same time and he uses both the total and the detail and from the detail he arrives at the shapeless, where he finds the profound dimension of cosmic energy.
